About Me

I am Kimberly Garver, MD, founder and CEO of MpowerD coaching. My passion is in helping physician leaders to be extraordinary. After over two decades of experience in physician leadership, I understand the real challenges in both academic and private practice settings. Good leadership can make the difference for everyone involved--leaders, faculty and staff, and ultimately patients. Learning to control what you can, do it well, and promote your own health and wellbeing in the process is the key to being successful in this rewarding but very high stakes stressful work environment. You can have enormous impact on all of your people if you do this well.

During the COVID pandemic I had two significant roles in my department--being the Associate Chair for Department Life and Culture for 1300 people and the Division Director of Breast Imaging. In addition, I cared for and grieved the loss of three parents over a grueling 13 month period. My body was telling me it was too much--my right shoulder froze, followed by my left jaw. Eventually, I ended up in the hospital with an arrythmia and had an ablation which improved my condition but did not eliminate it. Deciding to retire to an adjunct position was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made--leaving a career I loved, incredible opportunity, and a great team of people. But given the fact that stress was the most important trigger for my heart meant I needed to take better care of myself so I could enjoy my family and friends in retirement. Learning how to recreate myself in retirement has become a new passion and one I realized could be so helpful for physicians like me who are uncertain of how to take this wonderful but uncertain next step in their life's journey. I became certified in retirement coaching to help other physicians plan for a a rewarding, meaningful and enjoyable "second chapter".

I am a certified leadership, executive and organizational development coach through the Certified Coaching Alliance and a member of the International Coaching Federation. I have additional certification in retirement coaching and work with a team of financial and estate planners that can help you thrive in retirement. I am currently an adjunct faculty in the Department of Radiology at Michigan Medicine and an internal executive coach for Michigan Medicine. I provide personalized 1:1 coaching to assist with leadership training and supportive problem solving, address burnout and work-life balance, and plan for career transitions or retirement. I offer group coaching for your leadership team or work unit to perform team assessments and support customized interventions that will improve relationships, workflows, communication, quality and safety, and performance.
